Maajid Nawaz: A global culture to fight extremism
Maajid’s comments on the way that modern communication technology has enabled pockets of parochialism to become connected and to feel that they are part of a larger phenomenon are fascinating.
I doubt, however, that there is much appetite in many Muslim countries for the kind of youth oriented pro-democracy movement he is advocating. The essential problem that will prevent the emergence of any kind of modern pluralistic democracy in any of these countries is the educational system. As long as that is controlled by conservative religious elements the ability of any form of understanding of democratic institutions will be effectively precluded.
